3-Port Motorised Valve: The Common Issue in Heating Systems

One of the most frequent issues in central heating systems is the failure of the 3-Port motorised valve, typically occurring as the heating season starts in early October.
Why does this happen?

During the summer, when your central heating is not in use, the 3-Port motorised valve remains in its default open position, directing heat from the boiler to the hot water cylinder. Over time, if the heating water becomes contaminated with rust, sludge, or metal particles from the radiators, and the valve is not in regular motion, it can become stuck. When you turn on the heating, the thermostat signals the valve to switch to the heating position, but it fails to move. As a result, the motor over the valve can burn out, leaving you with hot water but cold radiators.

What’s the solution?

To fix this, both the motor/actuator and the valve body, which connects to the flow pipe from the boiler, must be replaced. This repair typically takes between 2.5 to 4 hours to complete, restoring full functionality to your heating system.

he most common faults in central heating systems are 3-Port motorised valve failure.
Usually, the failure appears when the heating season starts at the beginning of October.
Why did the fault occur?

In the summer season, when you stop using the central heating, the 3-Port motorised valve is in the open position to heat water as default – the heat from the boiler is going to the hot water cylinder.
When the central heating water is dirty ( contaminated with rust and sludge from the radiators or small particulates of metal from radiators which travel in the central heating water ) and the valve is not moving for a longer period, it becomes stuck. Then you call for heating, and the thermostat sends the signal to the 3-Port motorised valve to move to the heating position, but that’s not happening. The motor over the 3-port valve breaks/burns and stops working, and you find out that the hot water is hot, but the radiators are cold.
What to do?
The 3-Port motorised valve needs to be replaced both parts the motorised part-the motor/actuator and the valve the metal body attached to the flow pipe from the boiler.
The repair may take from 2.5 hours to 4 hours.
